- Road test vehicle. Vehicle has an active check engine light and power delivery is very erratic. Vehicle also has a loud slamming/banging noise under moderate to heavy acceleration that can be felt in the driveline and center console of the vehicle. Vehicle also has excessive engine vibrations as if the powertrain mounts are weak or collapsed. Hoist vehicle and inspect drivetrain. Found a severely deteriorated driveshaft carrier bearing bushing; allowing driveshaft to wobble and causing the slamming/banging noise on acceleration. Connect diagnostic unit and fault scan. DME reports active faults P2187 system too lean at idle bank 1, P2189 system too lean at idle bank 2, P1096 air mass ahead of the throttle valve is implausible, P0491 secondary air injection system insufficient flow bank 1, and P0492 secondary air injection system insufficient flow bank 2 Need to address P2187 and P2189 faults prior to the diagnosing P0492 and P0491 faults as the fault monitoring for these codes is done via the oxygen sensors and may be skewed due a lean condition. Vehicle is indeed running very lean at idle per fuel trims. Can hear and audible vacuum leak from the engine bay with the engine idling. Smoke test engine intake system to check for air leaks. Found large leak at the valve cover and through the engine oil filler cap(with cap removed). Suspect engine air oil separator(AOS) has failed and additional vacuum leaks due to severely leaking valve cover. Recommend replacing engine AOS assembly and valve cover gasket. Additionally recommend replacing both bank 1 and bank 2 pre-catalyst oxygen sensors due to age and possible skewing of readings if tainted from running lean.
- Replaced rear drive shaft. Replaced broken exhaust clamp bolts.
- Remove engine cover, engine compartment trim panels, intake snorkel, throttle body, engine air filter housing, valve cover, and intake manifold. Remove and replace engine air oil separator, purge line assembly, and valve cover gaskets. Clean leaked engine oil. Re-install removed components. Clear faults and road test. Verify engine oil level. Operating as designed after repairs.
