Services Performed
- Diagnose. Check codes. P0346 Camshaft sensor implausible signal. P1347 Camshaft position sensor 2/engine speed sensor incorrect correlation. Check MVB 208 and 209 for camshaft deviation. The exhaust cam has a deviation of 3 degrees which is OK. The intake cam has no reading at all. Per the TSB from VW: With excessive chain lengthening, the idle values will be below -8.0°KW, or the displayed fields will be empty. We have an empty display field for the intake cam. The next step is to physically check the timing of the cams.
- Pull fault codes. P0341 g40 intake cam sensor implausible signal. Rechecked signal wire from sensor to pin 86 of DME (OK). Next step is to remove the cam sensors, put the engine at TDC and check for camshaft alignment per TSB 15 10 07 2012600/4 September 10, 2010 (OK. engine matches the pictures in the TSB). This only checks the upper timing chain for stretch.
- Check codes P0341 G40 cam sensor implausible signal. P1340 Camshaft position sensor G40/speed sensor g28 incorrect correlation. Intermittent. Verified the faults with Vag-Com and Autel (same) Check g40 sensor wave form at DME (OK). Check MVB 208 and 209 for camshaft deviation (must be in between -/+5 degrees). Exhaust cam (OK, -2 degrees). Intake cam (not OK, MVB field was blank). VW says this can be caused by the timing be out of specification. Check MVB 90 and 91 for camshaft adjustment specified and actual. (exhaust camshaft adjustment will bounce from 0 degrees to 63 degrees even though the DME is not calling for any adjustment). Since the DME is getting the signals it needs from the camshaft sensors and the DME is seeing a cam correlation fault, the timing chains need to be replaced. These engines are known for needing timing chains, cam adjuster solenoids, timing cover seals, valve cover gasket, tensioners, ramps guides, camshaft controllers and the main drive gear that turns the chains. To do this work effectively, the engine needs to be removed. Also, it would be good to service anything on the engine that can be accessed. (i.e., drive belt, water pumps, gaskets, etc.).
- R&R engine and transmission. R&R cooling hoses and wiring harness. Separate transmission and engine. R&R flywheel.
- R&R intake manifold. R&R valve cover and timing chain covers. Install new timing components. Install new camshaft position sensors.
- ***AWH added this after the job was sold
- Left rear toe will not come into spec. Adjust front toe. Test drive (OK)
